Dragon Riders... and more.

So there's an announcement that there may be a Dragonriders of Pern Movie in our Future. (Source HERE) As someone who has read my fair share of Anne McCaffrey I'm not sure how I feel about this. I really really enjoyed Dragonriders. I haven't read it in years so now that this is out I may have to dust off my copy so that I can read it again. If you are dusting off yours let me know, maybe we should do a read along??

What I would love to see is one of my FAVOURITE Anne McCaffery series ... The Rowan. We have progressed far enough with Digital Imaging that I think there are a few Anne McCaffery series that could make some beautiful movies now.

I have actually read the Rowan over and over again since I was in highschool. I re-read the series every time. Every time I read it I'm at a different stage in my life and can relate to the books in different ways. I think that's the most fascinating thing about literature. I love books with re-readability. Books that you can pick up years again years apart and enjoy just as much as the first read for a whole different reason. There are a few series and individual novels that I have read which follow this idea.

All in all I look forward in some ways to the Dragon Rider's Movie... if nothing more than to watch the (hopefully) beautiful imagery that someone can create. Who wouldn't want to be flying over the world on the back of a dragon?? Seriously!

On another note. You should totally go watch the trailer for Tomorrow Land. It looks Amazing.

Some crafty nights with Agent Carter.

So this weekend I've decided to be a stay at home and "Craft all the things".

I've actually managed to get 2 pocket letters done so far. Being I assume that my pocket penpals aren't really reading my blog (I apoligize if you are!!) I figured I could post the fronts here. I'm not posting the back with the contents, JUST IN CASE they do read this then they can still be surprised.

It's been really fun pulling out my big box of craft stuff when the kids go to bed and puttering with stickers and paper and stuff. Hopefully I'll start preparing my awesome Geeky Ones that I'll be sending in the next two weeks as well. I also have an AWESOME swap that I'm a part of where we get to send a package with 30 days of little presents. 

So much crafting and Geeky Love... I can't contain it all.

Last week finished of Agent Carter. Now I haven't watched Marvel Agents of Shield (I know, Bad Marvel Geek, Bad!) but I really really liked the Agent Carter series. Today The Mary Sue released an article which pretty much says that they don't know if they'll make more but maybe. (Find it HERE) 

I really hope that they do figure out something. There is enough random villains and such in the Marvel universe, there's no reason that can't have her fighting SOMEONE. Seriously! 

Well, now I'm off to hopefully do some awesome Geeky Crafting this weekend.

Reasons it's fun to be a Geeky Mom to little Girls.

I have been trying lately to mostly keep this blog about my love of Geeky Things. Informative but still informal. I have avoided (other than yesterday) talking too much about my kids and my home life. After sitting last night for an hour laughing at my daughters I realized I should share why it TOTALLY ROCKS to be the mom of little girls. I know Geek culture often gears things at little boys, they seem to forget that little girls can be superheroes as strong as Thor or as fast as The Flash. As a Mom who loves and is learning to embrace her inner geek I've tried to keep gender biasing to a minimum, but sometimes you just have a pretty princess.

Reason 1: Evening Crafting of COOL things!

Some nights you just need to make some home made Steam Punk goggles like DracuBecca.

There have been a few nights that resulted in last minute, before bedtime, crafting of some sort of Goggles or Hats or Bracers or something that is "Necessary to Survive" (or at least that is how it feel). I don't mind doing this at all!

Reason 2: Awesome Hair

My kid loves all the hair chalks. She often wants her hair blue or pink or purple. I'm that weird mom that sends her kid to dance class in multi-coloured tights and bright hair. I think it's great that she wants to be more than the pastel pink girl that others try and turn their kids into. If she wants colours I will give her colours.

Reason 3: Random Costume Days

Some days are just Dinosaur days. Yes when the weather gets better if she wants to be a dino all day I will let her. We have gone out to dinner in everything from Batman or Spiderman Costumes, to Princess Dresses, to Dinosaurs. They are kids and costumes are one of the best part of being a kid.

Reason 4: EVERY hero becomes a girl simply by adding "Girl" to the title.

We have some girly superhero costumes (a la Batman Girl costume above) and not so girly costumes (I was trying to find a picture of my monkey in her spiderman outfit to avail). It doesn't matter what the costume is, or who the character is... as soon as she puts it on she is xxxx Girl. Spiderman Girl. Batman Girl. Wolverine Girl... Anything, it just has to have "Girl" afterwards. It's kinda awesome actually.

Reason 5: Late night Avengers Watching

Some of my less geek friends have their little ones crying, saying they can't go to bed till watch Hanna Montana like shows. Not my kid. My kid cries till she can watch an episode of the Avengers. Or Pouts because she wanted an episode with Ant Man, or Captain America, or Black Panther, and the one we watched didn't have the character she was in the mood for.

I'm a proud mom of 2 little geek girls in training. The oldest is well on her way and the youngest is just starting, but I can't help but be proud of the fact that they love Comics and Cartoons. My youngest will proudly state which characters are which on posters. Will complain to the comic store clerk that her favourite character isn't included in something, and will ask me to make her costumes of a variety of characters. I'm sure when she starts school she'll be dressed up a lot of the time.

I am exceptionally proud that she doesn't believe that the boys are stronger than the girls. She states straight out that she will punch the bad guy in the nose (which isn't always good when her cousin's are pretending to be the bad guys... but so be it lol ). She says she can be Ant Man, Iron Man or whoever she wants to be that day... and I agree with her.

So to all those Geeky Moms with Little Girls out there. Keep it up!!!!

The PLAGUE... and maybe an Avenger :)

So I had the plague yesterday. Missed work and life. Sleep was my best friend.
I'm feeling better, mostly alive. Only partially dead. So I decided I should share some cool things.

I apologize if my pen pal that I'm sending this too see's it. But here's my first Pocket Letter. I admit I'm not stuffing them with as much stuff as others might. Part of my fascination with them is that they look like mini scrapbooks. The stuff is just bonus for me, but I managed to figure out a way to get SOMETHING in every pocket :) YAY.

I have 5 plus more to make. I'll hopefully get a better picture of the next ones. But I think you get the idea of it from my crappy photo!.

This made me snarf: Deadpool and SpiderMan. I'm not going to post the pic here... just go see it. I started watching the show on Netflix just haven't gotten that far yet.

Oky, so for all the geeks out there I decided I had a Mom win the other day when my Daughter (4 years old) told my mom a story about how her and my brother (her Uncle Kristan) would fight "Ultron with the Red and Black Face". She insists on that part, saying "the Red and Black Faced Ultron not the other one" -I'm sure the other one she's talking about is the Silver Bodied one but I haven't found a picture of a Red and Black faced one. Now Uncle Kristan has muscles so he can fight Ultron and beat him up. Between her and Uncle Kristan they would defeat Ultron and then our Miniature Dachshund (Tank) would pee on Ultron's Foot.

When I heard the story from her and from my mom all I could think of was I was a proud Geek Mom. :) I, of course, told her that she and her Uncle Kristan could definitely defeat Ultron. She responded saying she still needs a Pym Costume.

Jupiter Ascending to New Pen Pals.

So last night I went and saw Jupiter Ascending with a friend of mine. After reading some very mixed reviews (and I never read reviews fully because I don't like all the spoilers) I decided to go into the movie with a lowered expectation on what it will be.

Well I was pleasantly surprised. The stuff was SO COOL. Who doesn't want metal wings, and anti-gravity roller blades, and mechs?? Seriously! I loved the fins on the ships to the different looks of each faction. No it wasn't an Oscar worthy script, but what movie that is an action movie is?? I'm a fan of anything from Die Hard to Hairspray. The fights were good, the air battles were neat. The attitude of Mila Kunis was awesome. What else do you need??

I would kind of like them to make a sequel to see what happens with the other two siblings at the end (I'm being vague so that I don't spoil things for anyone). I would like to see how she deals with things after the initial encounter in this movie. But all in all it was pretty and fun and exactly what I like to see in theaters.

On a different note.

Yesterday I went shopping and bought ALL THE THINGS. All the things this weekend were scrapbook/ pocket pen pal/ iggle swap related. I think I spent WAY too much money but it was so fun and some of the stuff I got was really cool.

Other that these lovelies (which I will start posting finished pockets soon). I had a wonderful time at my daughter's Monster High/Avengers Birthday party. Although she decided on adding Avengers, I had already had a full Monster High theme prepared. Here's a copy of my final Cake:

POCKET LETTERS are so cool... Swappity Swap Swap (last Lists)

So today I feel like I am JOINING ALL THE THINGS. One of the lovely Iggles have got me onto these cool things called Pocket Letters.

As someone who wants to receive stuff in the mail that is NOT bills, I like the idea of having a ton of pen pals. But I'm going to have to try and refrain from having ALL the PENPALS. Other than this, the geek community is saddened today by the loss of Leonard Nemoy. I was also saddened by how few people in my office knew who he was. Maybe this geeky lady needs to find new work compatriots LOL. But until that point I will be remember the man for the legacy that he left. Let us not be saddened by his loss but rejoice in all he has given us.

May you always Live Long and Prosper Mr. Nemoy.

James Gunn Rocks... and other cool stuff. (and a list lol)

So today I found an awesome response by James Gunn in relation to the Oscars and their snubbing of the big box comic movies. I believe in everything that he said. Any medium (big or small) will have people putting just as much heart and emotion in it... as well as those using those mediums for personal gain. I have never felt the Oscars were a fair assessment of the talent used in film making or those associated with films. Why should the only films recognized be the most obtrusive, film festival, or dramatic genres?? How come there is such a divide in the industry...??

I didn't really find the Jack Black superhero jokes offensive, did you guys? It was, like, a joke. I'm not sure if you guys noticed, but the writing on the Oscars didn't seem to be all that well thought out.

As far as Dan Gilroy saying that attendees of the Independent Spirit Awards have survived against a "tsunami of superhero films" - well it seems a bit weird coming from a guy whose wife has acted in two Thor films - really, that seems like you've drowned horribly in that tsunami. But I know I just kind of make up stuff as I go along on these awards shows, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Whatever the case, the truth is, popular fare in any medium has always been snubbed by the self-appointed elite. I've already won more awards than I ever expected for Guardians. What bothers me slightly is that many people assume because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films.

I've made B-movies, independent films, children's movies, horror films, and gigantic spectacles. I find there are plenty of people everywhere making movies for a buck or to feed their own vanity. And then there are people who do what they do because they love story-telling, they love cinema, and they want to add back to the world some of the same magic they've taken from the works of others. In all honesty, I do no find a strikingly different percentage of those with integrity and those without working within any of these fields of film.

If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we're dumb. But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a "serious" filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than the Russo Brothers do Captain America, or Joss Whedon does the Hulk, or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken.

As any comic fan arguing over beloved characters can attest too, comics come from a love and passion just a fierce (if not scary at times) as any "Serious" filmaker's love of their art. Most recent Comic Directors have a love of the medium, character and genre.

I haven't read a lot of Manga or watched a lot of Anime in comparison with others I know. But I do like most of the Studio Ghibli stuff and the fact that I could get this cute, and slightly understated sweater is just awesome. If I could get understated Comic-y Clothing and Fan stuff, that was work appropriate. I would probably wear it all the time. That's it! Someone needs to make stuff for the Office Geek... Professionally Geeky Clothing!

There's only one answer appropriate... ALL of them! I have had such an amazing time recently getting to know a group of Iggles from different houses through Twitter and online. I have been making new connections and new friends. It's such an amazing feeling getting to know people who have similar interests to you.
